User Review: PUKKA Herbal Teas

I am a self-confessed coffee addict, as far as I’m concerned there is nothing better than a strong hot coffee but I’m currently breastfeeding and have been trying to drop some kilos, well since before I fell pregnant with baby number 3 so I have discovered that there is a place in life for herbal teas also.

Herbal teas come in many flavours and offer many health benefits; for a while there I even managed to replace my morning coffee with a green tea. Peppermint tea was good for morning sickness, there are teas that help to calm and relax before bed. I’m sure there are also teas good to boost supply which perhaps I should look into…

PUKKA Herbs is a company creating sustainably produced organic herbal teas of the highest quality. PUKKA herbal blends use the wisdom of India’s ancient health system, Aurveda, to create teas with fabulous flavour as well as health benefits.

We are into March and that means Autumn is here, the weather may not have realised it yet but I’m sure it won’t be too long. Autumn generally brings with it cooler winds and cold, dry weather which aggravates the nervous system and moisture in out bodies. One way to help keep these areas in check is with warming, supportive and boosting herbal teas, which is exactly what we have to offer a selection of our Club members to trial.

We have three different boxes of Herbal Tea heading out to readers for review, all of them ideal for this Autumn weather heading our way.

PUKKA GINSENG MATCHA GREEN

Let Pukka’s Ginseng Matcha Green tea put some season-inspired pep in your step, with its blend of emerald green matcha and verdant whole leaf green tea, fired up with red ginseng then cooled with the magic of lemon tulsi.

Red ginseng is a traditional herb for supporting energy and maintaining balance in the adrenal system, using adaptogenic herbs for energy and blood sugar balance.  Tulsi has adaptogenic properties too, and has been traditionally used for mental clarity and focus. It is considered a sacred and spiritual herb which offers a beam of clarity and joyful lift to the spirits.  The tea’s ginger root is also naturally warming and stimulating, encouraging circulation to get your blood pumping and your autumn skin glowing.

PUKKA TURMERIC GOLD

One of the most ‘googled’ super-spices in 2016, turmeric is revered for its anti-inflammatory, blood purifying and circulation boosting properties.  Pukka’s Turmeric Gold is a turmeric tonic for tea lovers that sees organic turmeric lifted by lemon fruit, aromatic cardamom and rich organic green tea, to fire up the circulation and ignite a golden glow that shines from the inside out.

Both Pukka’s Turmeric Gold and Ginseng Matcha Green teas use specific forms of green tea that provide a gentle lift without that edgy, jittery feeling found in more heavily caffeinated beverages, such as coffee.

PUKKA HERBAL COLLECTION

The Herbal Collection is a selection of 5 different tea blends in one box, so that you can try before committing to an entire box. This divine collection includes Elderberry and Echinacea, Lemon, Ginger and Manuka Honey, Night Time, Three Mint and Detox.

Elderberry and Echinacea
Let yourself fall into a deep bed of ripe wild fruits: purple-black elderberries and inky blackcurrants – blessed by the fragrant elderflower and touched by the tingling notes of Echinacea. Echinacea is widely known as a herb that encourages a healthy immune system and is a common natural remedy to reduce the severity of colds. Consuming Echinacea through tea is a great way to access the therapeutic compounds found in Echinacea roots.

Lemon, Ginger and Manuka Honey
Take a seat, and a moment, to settle and savour the spicy-sweet zest of sun-ripe whole Sicilian lemons, slow-dried ginger root and elderflowers. Finally, the velvet kiss of Manuka honey creates a cup of tea that warms the spirits.

Night Time
This dreamy blend is a saviour for the sleep deprived; or those that find it hard to quiet the mind.  Packed with therapeutic herbal ingredients, the tea includes organic oat flower to encourage sleepiness, lavender to relax the body and a silky sweet lime flower to calm the spirit.

Three Mint
A classic herbal tea favourite, this three mint tea blends peppermint, spearmint and field mint to deeply refresh and calm. The full-flavoured tea spans a variety of minty aromas, offering a delicate brew that will support digestion and refresh the palate. Unlike regular mint teas, Pukka’s Three Mint doesn’t become bitter after a long brew, owing to its well-balanced constituents.

Detox
Not just any detox tea, this is the ultimate organic cup to give your body a spring clean. With a splash of sweet aniseed and crisp fennel, feel your senses come alive with lush cardamom and licorice root. Pukka’s Detox tea uses a cross-section of detoxifying herbs renowned for their digestive, decongesting and anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains celery seed, which can also help clear uric acid from the blood.

All Pukka teas are Certified Organic by the Soil Association and the USDA, with ingredients that can be traced back to the field in which they were grown.  Pukka teas are also certified Fair for Life and FairWild.  Pukka is distributed in Australia by Organic Trader and is available from select health food stores, independent grocers, and online at www.pukkaherbs.com.au

RRP $7.95

Thanks to PUKKA Herbs 12 of our Beauty and Lace members will be reviewing these herbal tea blends and you can read what they thought in the comments below. Personally, I can’t wait to find out what they thought.

  1. I like to think that I’m a bit of a tea aficionado 🙂 so was very much looking forward to trying the new Autumn range of Pukka Teas. My husband only drinks tea (loathes coffee) so he too was eager to give the Pukka tea a try.

Arriving in a lovely bright pink canvas bag, I was fortunate enough to receive a box of the ‘Pukka Ginseng Matcha Green Tea’ and I have to say there’s so much to love about this tea!

The tea is branded as Organic, made with whole leaves, lemon tulsi, pure green matcha and red ginseng and comes in a box of 20 tea bags.

As per the instructions, I brewed my tea for a good 15 minutes, 9which is easily done as a Mum of four who is constantly sidetracked)! The aroma of the tea bag before the infusion was so lovely, it was fragrant without being too overpowering. I found this tea to be very well-balanced, not one ingredient outshone the other as all the flavours were complimenting the other, which made this brew very smooth and well-balanced. I found this flavour combination not at all bitter like some green/matcha teas can be. I could definitely taste the lemon tulsa and matcha enough to know they were in the tea, however all the flavours were non over-powering and were quite subtle as a whole.

One thing that particularly struck me was how smooth the brew was. I am not sure how particularly ‘uplifting’ the tea was, however I did find it a very pleasant morning starter as much as it was a lovely calming ‘wind-down’ tea before bed. My husband was equally impressed, and he is usually a stickler for strong black teas as opposed to the herbal variety and he remarked how palatable the teas was and how pleasantly surprised he was to actually enjoy a herbal tea!

My overall thoughts are that the Pukka Ginseng Match Green Tea is a delicious and soothing tea with the added health benefits of being a match green tea that is subtle, smooth and very pleasant to drink.
I will definitely be buying this tea as my go to ‘feel good’ tea.

Thank you very much Beauty and Lace and Pukka Tea for giving me the opportunity to review such a delicious and smooth tea!

    1. I agree Monique, with the teas being smooth and so well balanced I was so surprised there was no bitter after taste for me like other herbal teas.

  2. What a pleasant surprise Pukka tea really is! As soon as I opened my package I was engulfed with the most sensational aromas and the pink bag had me smelling it like it had me under a spell haha.
I seriously did not realise how great this tea is and love every flavour so far except I didnt get to try the Elderberry and Echinacea due to my eldest son putting it into his cup and having the kettle boiling so fast I could barely blink.
I am a coffee lover but now am converted to this tea as it doesnt leave that bitter taste in your mouth, it can make 2 cups as I refill it straight after I have drank my first one it is just that darn good. It runs rings around other brands by far as I thought I knew the best brand to buy but have to say, boy how wrong I am now, Pukka all the way!!!
I got the Tumeric Gold box and some seperate samples as well like the Elderberry and Echinacea, Ginseng matcha green and the Detox tea which was absolutely glorious!
I can`t rave and thankyou enough for the opportunity to be blessed enough to try these teas as I am now converted and will drink less coffee because these teas are so beneficial, tasty, satisfying and outweigh all other teas by a mile.
Thanks Beauty and Lace and Pukka teas, you really made my week that little bit more special 🙂

  3. Pukka Herbal Teas are very impressive!

I received the Pukka Ginseng Matcha Green Tea and was pleasantly surprised by the refreshing and smooth taste. I love herbal tea but am not very fussed on some brands as they are either too bitter or don’t really taste that good. However, I loved this Pukka green tea. There was no bitter after taste and the smell is also gorgeous. Unlike normal caffeinated tea or coffee, I don’t feel guilty if I feel like more than one cuppa! Not to mention all the health benefits!

I also received a number of other tea samples and loved them all!

Thank you Pukka and Beauty and Lace for providing these wonderful teas.

If you haven’t tried Pukka yet, I thoroughly recommend it!

  4. I was delighted to receive a selection of Pukka Herbal Collection of teas to sample. Can I just say, I love the packaging, the box is brightly coloured and when I opened my parcel and saw the vibrant pink canvas bag containing my tea, it was enough to put a smile on my face and brighten my day.

I think if you are keen to try different types of herbal blends, this selection would be ideal to try before buying the full sized box of one particular flavour. I’ve bought boxes of herbal tea before and not liked the flavour and it’s ended up in the bin. This is a great way to try before you commit to a big box of tea. Plus, I like the idea of being able to select a tea tailored to what my needs are, whether it’s the Elderberry and Echinacea to boost my immune system, detox tea, night tea to help me sleep, manuka honey, ginger and lemon for uplifting or a refreshing Three Mint tea to aid in digestion.

The teabags are individually wrapped and there is 20 tea bags in the box, containing 4 bags of the 5 different varieties. The directions on the packaging was to infuse the tea bag for up to 15 minutes in boiled water and then sit back and enjoy your cuppa.

So far I’ve tried 3 of the varieties and I’ve enjoyed all of them so far, especially the night time version. After a hectic day it’s nice to unwind in the evening and have a cup of tea that helps me drift of to peaceful slumber. As it’s caffeine free, it doesn’t keep me awake at night. I prefer to infuse the tea for about 5 mins, rather than the full 15 mins because I like a milder taste, in saying that, I can use the tea bag twice and have two cups! The tea has no bitter after taste and has a lovely smooth, herbal flavour and the tea is slightly sweet. I’ve really enjoyed having a cup of herbal tea at night instead of my regular English Breakfast tea, it’s been nice to have another variety of tea to drink.

Its also good to note that Pukka herbals teas are also kind to the environment by using renewable sources, they also use organic string on the tea bags and because they don’t use staples they can be easily composted. It’s a tea that’s good for my health and also kind to the planet. I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to try this delicious tea and it’s something I would buy again.

  5. Thank you to Pukka for allowing me to trial these teas. Loved the bright pink bag! The packaging is modern yet understated. There was an earthy aroma once I opened up the package which reminded me of nature, goodness and purity. Such a lovely and calming smell.
I have tried the Mint Matcha Green, the Turmeric Gold and Ginseng Matcha Tea and, although I am not usually a huge fan of Green Teas – usually find them too Green if that makes sense – and I was impressed by the smoothness and lack or ‘green’ aftertaste. Enjoyable and found they were a great substitute for my afternoon coffee.
This may be a good opportunity to replace the afternoon caffeine hint with something more natural. I particularly liked the Turmeric as I am supposed to take Turmeric supplements for joint care but as I cannot ingest black pepper, there are hardly any on the market I can take so this is a good way to get this remarkable anti-inflammatory into my daily intake!
I will certainly be sourcing my own pack of Turmeric and hope I can make some new healthy habits
Thanks again Beauty and Lace for giving me the opportunity.

  6. I was pleased to try out the PUKKA Tea range being a big cuppa fan. I received a gorgeous box of Turmeric Gold tea plus added bonus of a few other loose tea bags (Ginseng Matcha Green, Detox, Chamomile, Vanilla & Manuka Honey, and Elderberry and Echinacea) to sample.

Arriving in a bright pink PUKKA canvas bag and having not tried this brand or flavors before it was exciting to try something new!

My normal favorites are earl grey or green tea, so not overly adventurous. So when receiving Turmeric Gold all that came to mind is curry! So not knowing that people drank it in tea form I researched some of the benefits of Turmeric. I was surprised to find it has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Additionally green tea is great for digestion, which is why I love a green tea when my tummy feels bloated or after a big meal – I swear by it!

Turmeric gold tasted (not like a curry) but citrus and ginger-like. (Turmeric is from the same family as ginger) plus it smells divine brewing (which it needs 15 minutes of – which suits me as being a busy mum, who has time to sip boiling hot tea). This tea was pleasant and not overpowering in any of the flavors, nicely balanced and not bitter like most green teas can be.

Recently I have been trying out a Detox tea to help with weight loss. So was glad to try a new brand (they are not easy to come by in the supermarkets). For the Ginseng Matcha Green – my sister in law is Korean and she likes/drinks lots of Ginseng tea and will often buy it for me from the Asian markets, so it was nice to try two of my favorites together (Ginseng and green tea) this tea had a nice hint of lemongrass too. I am not sold on the flavor of Elderberry and Echinacea, although having a cold this week I am sure the Echinacea was doing some good!

The kids and I have recently started up a worm farm, so I love that I can dispose of the tea bags in with the worm food. Great for the environment!

So what’s not to love, organically sourced ingredients, environmentally friendly packaging, numerous health benefits and great tasting!

Who knew I had so much to say about tea! Thanks Beauty and Lace and PUKKA teas, happy to recommend your range to any tea lover, plus I am keen to try out your Night Time tea after being impressed with your other samples!

  7. Wow, where do I start, perhaps with a refreshing and soothing cup of Pukka tea.
Thank you BeautyandLace and Pukka teas for this relaxing trial opportunity.

I received the beautifully designed Pukka Herbal Collection tea box which contains 20 mixed bags of teas including elderberry & echinacea, lemon, ginger & Manuka honey, night time, three mint and detox. I also received a very pretty bright pink Pukkka tote bag and a few other single tea bag samples like turmeric gold, chamomile, vanilla & Manuka honey.

I’ve tried herbal teas before and never really got into the whole fruity tea thing, but this range is fruity plus more. I have to admit that some of the teas have a strong licorice root flavour/sweetness, so it’s like black licorice/aniseed which I don’t really enjoy. This is my own taste as I know some people love the taste of black licorice.

Saying that, my favourite is probably the three mint, it’s great to have in the afternoon for a pick me up. I also enjoyed the night time tea, although it has the black licorice fragrance and after taste.

And oh my goodness, the elderberry & echinacea has beetroot in it! And maybe that’s why it’s a pretty red pink colour. It makes a nice change to the usual herbal teas and is nice and different to try.

I let my teas infuse for about 2-4 minutes, which makes it perfect for instant relaxation and allows me to taste the ingredients without making them bitter. I can also see the natural ingredients in the transparent tea bag.

I think this tea box is perfect for anyone to try because it has a wonderful assortment of teas, for any time of day. It would also be a great idea to include this pretty floral box of teas in a gift hamper for a special friend.

I have tried other brands of teas which have been artificially flavoured, but these little bags contain real ingredients whichever bring out the true flavour and benefits of the tea. I would recommend these without any hesitation because they contain natural ingredients, are caffeine free and taste delicious.

I’m normally an English Breakfast tea drinker, but these do make a nice change from the usual routine.

Thank you once again BeautyandLace and Pukka teas for reviving my interest in yummy herbal teas!

  8. I was excited by my package of Pukka teas. They are so vibrant and easy to distinguish the flavours by the brightly coloured packaging.

It’s hard to find a nice matcha in a teabag and I was excited to try this variety. I let my matcha green steep for 5mins. The taste is gorgeous, that uplifting smell a full bodied green tea flavour.

I have been having the detox teabag of a morning. I’m a Mum to a baby and toddler and would welcome to loose a few kgs. The taste of the detox is light and refreshing. I much prefer this tea to any diet shakes or smoothies.

I love the box of twenty assortment of teas. I have taken a few to work like the lemon and ginger. I love the variety of every time having a new tea to try. I have had lots of comments on the gorgeous smells of the lemon with a hint of ginger..

I will definitely be repurchasing Pukka teas and recommending them to friends and family.

  9. I am a huge fan of herbal teas and drink them all the time especially when I am at work. There is something about herbal teas that help to calm the stress of work.

Thanks to Beauty and Lace for being introduced to a great brand of Herbal Teas . PUKKA. I am hooked and I have already looked at their website. I am blown away by the HUGE variety of teas they offer. So much fun to choose blends I haven’t tried before. I must say I have a huge wishlist by now.

I got a full box of PUKKA , Turmeric GOLD tea to try with a variety of other tea samples. The packaging of the tea of PUKKA Turmeric Gold is so vibrant and cheerful. I love the amazing designs.
When I opened the packet Oh My the scent of the tea was mind-blowing. It immediately reminded me of my trip to India and all the wonderful spices available there. It was a great flashback and delight. I could just imagine myself wandering through the spice markets in India.

The Gold has turmeric, green tea, lemon and a dash of cardamon.
Turmeric is good for your health. It has great anti inflammatory properties. Good to have if you have a throat infection, the turmeric helps to heal that.
Beauty lovers will love this tea because this tea helps to bring some healthy glow to your skin.

The turmeric Gold tea tasted nice and not bitter as I had initially thought. It did not have any pungent scent either. It just had that herbal turmeric scent which I absolutely loved. It says in the packaging to brew this tea for fifteen minutes which I found a bot longer then I usually brew my tea for. The tea was yellow in colour and you will be glad to know that the yellow colour did not stain my teeth. There was a slight hint of cardamom in this tea which I felt helped to freshen my breath.
This is a great tea for winter in my opinion because it has warmth, Turmeric helps to bring warmth to your body, it has anti inflammatory properties , help to guard you against infections and body pains.

Another sample which I absolutely loved was the detox tea. Great to have at the end of a stressful day. The blend contains organic aniseed, fennel and cardamom. It is a sweet tea so great too when you are craving something sweet and want to opt for something healthier.

PUKKA teas are really affordable and are a bargain price for the quality and variety of teas you get. The teas are boutique quality with a pocket friendly price tag. They are environmentally friendly too which is a huge bonus.
I love the term PUKKA which means I have found the PERFECT tea brand for my tea obsession.
I am addicted to this brand now which is great because the variety of teas is huge and they are so healthy for you.

  10. Thanks for the opportunity to trial Pukka herbal tea.
I received the ginseng matcha green variety which, in all honesty, I probably wouldn’t have bought if I saw it in the shop. However, I’m glad I was given the chance to try it as I found it very pleasant to drink, without the bitterness I’ve experienced with some other herbal teas I’ve tried.
Definitely a tea I would buy and recommend to my friends.
    Thank you.

  11. Thanks to Beauty and Lace and Pukka for the opportunity to trial their herbal teas.
I received the Herbal Collection which contained mixed bags including Elderberry & Echinacea, Lemon,Gnger & Manuka Honey, Three Mint and Turmeric Gold.. I also received a lovely bright pink Pukkka bag and a few other single tea bag samples. Loved the floral box which the teabags came in too.
I’m usually more of a coffee drinker but have a friend I see every week and she cannot have anything with caffeine in. Last week we tried the Three Mint Tea which we both really enjoyed. I’ve since tried the Lemon Ginger & Honey and Turmeric Gold which were both good too. Could definitely taste the ginger in the Lemon Ginger Honey one.
Am looking forward to trying the others.
I will still be predominately a coffee drinker, but I would buy these teas to have as an alternative drink or as something different to offer to visitors.

  12. I was so excited to be a part of the Trial of Pukka teas! I have always admired their standout packaging in amazing colours and designs at my local grocers but I’ve never actually taken the plunge and purchased any thinking that it would just be like any other tea! I was also impressed that the Pukka team sent out a full box to trial along with an assortment of other teas to test with a lovely pink tote bag; which is already a regular on my supermarket trips!

I received a box of the Ginseng Matcha Green; which I was hoping for, as I am an avid lover of all things Matcha! I am obsessed with a good green tea latte so I was definitely excited to have received the tea with Matcha included.

Which is where the tea wasn’t what I expected, which is understandable. I’m used to Matcha referring to sweet things like latte’s and green tea ice-cream and cake. This is however a herbal blend tea, so I feel a bit silly for my expectations. However! Despite my initial misconceptions, I grew to really enjoy the taste of the tea. It’s a warming and smooth green tea as others here have described, and there doesn’t seem to be a herb overpowering any of the others, nor an overwhelming ‘green’ taste that i have found with other green teas I’ve tried. I have been absolutely loving it with our cool weather change, and have been enjoying it in the afternoon instead of a coffee.

Also it appears from the packaging that Pukka has some lovely business values that I appreciate. All of the ingredients are organically grown and ethically sourced and the packaging is recyclable and compostable which is amazing to see!

I’ll definitely be repurchasing more flavours in the future, there’s definitely more to Pukka tea than the pretty packaging and I hope everyone reading would considering picking up a package to try!
