Earlier this week I brought you the heartbreaking story of the Dulwich family and the tragic loss of their 7-year old son Connor.
Since that story went live there has been progress with the petition to have the speed limit changed.
The petition on Change.org is addressed to Mr Nick Champion MP, Member for Wakefield, South Australia and asks that rural areas with school buses stopping should have the limits lowered to 25km/hr from 7-9am and 3-5pm school days so that the same protections offered by school zones apply from when children leave home.
This change to the speed limit can’t bring Connor back, and it can’t change the heartbreak of his family and friends but if this change can save the life of another child then it will be some comfort. No family should ever have to suffer this.
Support is flowing in from friends and family with the signatures hitting 140 in around 18 hours, but not all of the signatures are from people who knew Connor and are directly affected by the tragedy.
This tragedy touches the lives not only of the people who knew Connor, or the people who live in his area; this tragedy touches the lives of anyone whose children catch a school bus in any rural area because it shows that it really could happen to anyone.
We don’t want any more lives lost before these changes are put in place.
Please help us to support the Dulwich family by taking a moment to sign the petition lowering speed limits around school bus stops. Not only while the bus is stopped but any time the children are there.
The area around schools has a speed limit of 25km/hr for the safety of the children and that is at any time that children are present. We believe that there should be signs on roads with bus stops lowering the limit while children are waiting for the bus. It can’t bring Connor back but if it can save the life of another child then at least it will save another family from the pain Connor’s family and friends are facing.
