Australia has a community minded population with a strong history of volunteering. Australian Bureau of Statistics research shows that 35% of Australians over the age of 18 volunteer at least once a fortnight, donating over 700 millions hours of work each year.
This community spirit has helped Australians through many a tough time, as we are seeing now with the thousands of volunteers lending a hand to clean up in the wake of the devastating Queensland floods.
2011 marks the 21st anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day, a community event that was started to help create a healthier, cleaner environment for future generations; a day on which thousands of Australians have shown their willingness to get their hands dirty for the environment.
2010 saw 588,000 Australians volunteer on Clean Up Australia day at 7,073 sites and removing approximately 15,560 tonnes of rubbish. Over the 21 year history there has been more than 24 million hours donated to help the environment and clear over 237,500 tonnes of rubbish.
There is an ongoing need to rally together and make a real difference, especially this year with the floods and the fires across our beautiful country. 2011 is shaping up to be the year in which even more people volunteer to chip in and help clean up their local streets, waterways, beaches and parks. Thousands of volunteers have already registered and event organisers are expecting to attract hundreds of thousands of volunteers.
Australia’s largest community participation event, Clean Up Australia Day, will be held on Sunday March 6th 2011. This year everyone needs to get involved and help out, for those of you who are touched by the situation in the flood devastated areas but aren’t in a position to head up there to help this is one way you can help do your bit.
