User Review: Weight Watchers Body Balance Bluetooth Diagnostic Scale

The scales are a fickle mistress let’s be honest. They don’t always give the answers we want and the numbers can be deceiving. You can work your butt off only to have the numbers go up and up. You can’t rely on your scales alone, you need to weigh in conjunction with taking measurements and rely on the fit of your clothes.

Let’s talk scales for a minute. I admit that I’m a slave to the scales, I actually got up the morning after giving birth and asked for scales – the midwives were stunned. I used the scales every time I was at the doctors to chart my progress in the hope that I wouldn’t put on too many kilos through my pregnancy.

My scales and I have a horrid relationship because they are ridiculously temperamental. I ended up marking a spot on my bathroom floor to make sure they were always in the same spot and still they taunt me. I can get on, dislike the number so hop off and straight back on and the reading is different by 2kg. My scales have it in for me.

It can be disheartening to work hard and not see the scales move but that might be different if you are using the Weight Watchers Body Balance Bluetooth Diagnostic Scale because you won’t just be measuring your weight. These scales use Bio-impedance analysis (BIA) to measure body fat, body water, bone mass, muscle mass and body mass index (BMI). So even if you aren’t happy with how the weight is changing you might see changes in other measurements.

Personally, I want to see my weight and BMI drop. I want to lower my Body Fat percentage and raise my Muscle Mass. Tracking my Body Water could be beneficial because I definitely do not drink enough water. All of these readings are measured with the Weight Watchers Body Balance Bluetooth Diagnostic Scale. Pair with the BetterMe Fitness App for an all round approach to fitness.

If you have a family like mine that all love to jump on the bandwagon, or the scales as the case may be, then these are definitely the scales for you. There is a 10 person user memory which will remember the age, height and gender of up to 10 different people with automatic user recognition.

I have had half the family on the scales already, but we haven’t set the users up yet. I might look at doing that over the weekend. Setting my user up on the app took me less than 5 minutes.

The scales can be used with or without the app, so you can set the whole family up as users but the kids don’t need the app. Goal setting and progress tracking needs the app but taking the measurement and saving different users does not.

Detailed, simple and easy to follow instructions are included with the scales so you can set users up with the app or without in a matter of minutes.

The only issue I have found so far is that you need to use the scales with bare feet so that the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes on the top of the scale can measure impedance. You will get an error message if your feet are not bare or they are too dry, and that would be fine if it wasn’t so cold in the mornings.

Ever since I bought my wii fit with it’s scales that graph progress I have been in thrall to the progress graphs and already I am hooked on the weight and BMI graphs on my app.

  1. I’m one of the lucky ones trailing the weight watchers scales!
    When they arrived I downloaded the app flowed the prompts and took a deep breath and weighed myself! Straight away all information was on my phone.
    Body weight
    Body fat
    Body water
    Bone mass mussel mass and BMI
    I never weigh myself so I was not happy at all with what I saw so I put on my walking shoes and headed out the door. Today Is one week since I got the scales now it’s time to weigh myself. After walking and watching what I eat I’ve lost 1kg. The scales are so easy to use jump on and the analize everything and you get a graph showing you results. I love the weight watchers scales I recommend them to anyone even if you don’t need to loose weight but want to build muscle or keep track of your bone mass they are fantastic. Thank you weight watchers and beauty and lace you’ve helped me get up and take control of my weight and fitness xxx

  2. Like a lot of people, I’m not severely overweight, but I’m carrying a bit more than I should. With each baby I retained a kilo or two of the baby weight, and suddenly I was looking at a choice: reverse the creep and feel healthier, or let the creep continue and wind up very definitely overweight and unhealthy.

    Guess what I chose? But health isn’t just about weight, so I was interested to try out scales that promised to assess a number of other factors too.

    First I tried the scales out just as scales, unconnected to anything else. They work just as accurately on either a hard floor or a carpeted floor – the carpet feet which are supplied are easy to click on and off if you’re switching locations. I did find that it’s a little difficult to turn on sometimes – you’re supposed to tap it to start it, but a couple of times I felt like I was getting close to assault before it recognised the message and switched on.

    Setting the scales up to recognise and remember an individual user was very easy and took only a few minutes. This is necessary because a number of the functions won’t work without your age, height etc, and setting the user up avoids you having to enter them every time you use the scales. You can set up multiple users.

    The scales also measure a number of factors like body mass, BMI, bone density, and so on. The instruction book contains a series of charts which indicates the range of measurements that might be considered too low, normal, or too high. One challenge of using the scales without connecting them to anything was that these measurements zip past pretty quickly, and it can be hard to find them on the chart quickly enough to make sense of them. There are of course ways around this, like writing them down then checking later. It’s also possible this would get easier with practice.

    So overall, unconnected with an app, these are a useful set of scales which give you some extra information over and beyond weight, and help you get a better sense of your overall health. I found them easy to use and very helpful.

    I then connected them to the app. I don’t have a smartphone, so used my iPad. Downloading the app was very easy, although setting it up was a little harder. This was mostly due to my trouble finding a username that wasn’t already in use. (“Ihatethis”, I salute you. We clearly felt the same way at a certain point in this process.) Once I’d got past the registration, though, it was pretty easy and quick to do the rest of the setup.

    The main value of connecting it is the ability to record and track your various readings. If you’re getting serious about making changes to your overall health, this helps you track a whole lot of indicators. Generally I’m a bit cynical about whether every object really needs to be connected, but in this case it’s genuinely useful. Losing weight and improving your health is generally a long term project, and being able to track these things and keep records quickly and easily will be a huge benefit, and probably an encouragement as well.

    I think a lot of people will find these surprisingly helpful. They’re easy to use even if you’re not very techy, and the setup only has to be done once per person. I really appreciate the opportunity to try these out. Thank you!
